An Honest Lie

— A wise man’s story.

A man who was known as wise and honest man was sitting one night on the road, when a boy ran up. The boy slowed down, and with anxious and fearful face, he said to the man, “Sir, please help me. Some men are looking for me. Please don’t tell them I’ve been through this road.” Without any further explanation, the boy ran away and disappeared.

For a few seconds the man thought about what really happened. One thing he knew, the boy was a good boy. He certainly was in the right side. With a quick thinking, the man crossed the road and sat on the other side. A few minutes later, some men really appeared, in an angry face, ready to beat up someone.

“Hey, Old Man, have you seen a boy through this road?” asked the leader of the gang.

The man kept calm and answered innocently, “I haven’t seen anybody through this road since I was sitting here.”

The gang’s face looked disappointed.

“If this man says so, it must be true. Let’s search him somewhere else,” said the leader. Later, the gang turned and went away.

The wise and honest characteristic of the man show in this story. If he decided to go away and chose not to face the gang, he would be irresponsible for a help that was asked by the boy. If he kept sitting in the same side of the road and said he didn’t see the boy, it sure is a lie. But he faced the problem, solved it quickly, and kept being wise and honest.

What can we learn from the story? For me, if we have a secret, we should keep it forever without telling any lies. It sure makes us think more, but it’s for our own sake. Because it’s our secret, and we have the responsibility to keep it. 🙂
